About inclusive business models

Inclusive business models started as a research project about scaling inclusive business models collaboratively in base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) contexts. Partners for this project are Nyenrode Business University, The Next Organization, TNO, University of Twente, 2SCALE and NWO.

The inclusive business models framework is supported with scientific literature on collaborative business models in BoP contexts. There are five lessons learned on the conceptualization, process and impact of collaborative business models as well as the collaborative and native capabilities needed to make them successful. From this the five-step framework was developed to support inclusive businesses in BoP contexts in scaling collaboratively. There is strong theoretical basis for the framework, but also extensive validation through workshops with six cases in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.

This interactive platform is developed to further share the five-step framework with inclusive businesses, NGOs, consultancies, scholars and many more.

The University of Twente participated in the research programme ‘Sustainable business models’, which ran from 2013 to 2021. In a joint final publication, the researchers describe the results and insights from the study. The publication gives ample attention to recommendations and action perspectives for companies that want to give shape to sustainable business models. The University of Twente, together with partners, carried out projects within the Sustainable Business Models programme.

Doing business in different contexts is a crucial competence for leaders in the 21st century. At Nyenrode Business University we want to educate people in this, but we can only do so if we also develop firsthand knowledge about how this is enacted in practice. That’s why we love it to be engaged in our common work around developing inclusive business models. As a university we especially focus on understanding what is different when you scale inclusive business models and develop training programs so entrepreneurs and other people involved can apply that knowledge in their own setting.
